Hyper Luminous IR Galaxies (HLIRG) exhibit extremely high star formation rates, and most of them seem to also harbour AGN. They are therefore unique laboratories to investigate the relationship between star formation and supermassive black hole growth. We propose to use the high sensitivity of XMM-Newton in the hard X-ray band to observe an unbiased sample of HLIRG, extensively studied in the FIR/submm. The combination of data in these two penetrating spectral ranges will address questions such as the AGN and starburst contributions to their bolometric emission, the distribution of the star forming material, and its relationship to the material feeding the black hole and obscuring the nuclear emission.
