The cluster soft excess has been an enduring mystery for many years. First discovered in the mid-90s it has now been confirmed by 4 separate missions (most recently by XMM-Newton) and its existence is beyond reasonable doubt. However, there still remains considerable uncertainty as to its origin (either thermal or non-thermal) and there are also possible data analysis issues. Here we propose to resolve some of these issues by observing the outskirts of two clusters with large measured soft excesses, to determine the redshift of the OVII/OVIII lines. If the lines are consistent with zero redshift the reported extended halos for these clusters must be of Galactic origin, whereas if not consistent with zero then a WHIM/thermal origin for the CSE will be verified.
