We propose to observe for 150 ks the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 with XMM, using RGS as the principal instrument. The spectrum of Mrk 279 displays absorption by ionized gas and a variety of emission lines. In particular, broad emission structures are seen around OVIII Ly alpha and OVII triplet. They can be interpreted as emission from the Broad Line Region (BLR). Only with the large effective area of RGS we can put constraints on the ionization and velocity broadening of such lines, to convincingly test if these features arise from the BLR as defined from optical and UV broad lines.
