The authors present a general but quantitative analysis of the effect of hyperfine structure on the analysis of stellar spectra in terms of the elemental abundances deduced. It is shown that the effects are larger than is sometimes appreciated, even on the linear portion of the curve of growth where the effect is generally considered to be "small". It is indicated that the available data on hyperfine structures are generally of insufficient accuracy for high quality analysis.
