The implications of nuclear theory for the final collapse of massive stars is examined. The development of an appropriate nuclear equation of state and its implementation in hydrodynamics are studied. The influence of nuclear dissociation and neutrino emission on the formation and propagation of shocks are investigated. The long term evolution of collapsed stellar cores after the initial hydrodynamic bounce, neutrino production and emission in all phases are derived, and potential effects of pion condensation and neutrino instabilities are explored.
