The aurora injects protons and the heavier ions of He(+) and O(+) into the magnetosphere, giving energy to, or absorbing energy from, the ring current and plasmasphere by way of electromagnetic ion-cyclotron interactions. The aurora's parallel electric fields are determined by perpendicular convection electric fields, which if on a sufficiently long time scale may themselves be strongly affected by the ring current. Attention is presently given to these connections, with emphasis on the relationship between parallel potential drops and the gross convection pattern.
