The generation of laboratory spectra reproducing the R-type band-like features observed in the visible spectrum of the Red Rectangle, a nebula centered on the star HD 44179 with a biconical geometry with the star at the apex, is reported. Four fluorescence features were produced in a 0.5% methane in argon plasma in which discharge products are trapped in an argon matrix at a temperature less than 20 K, together with a spectral absorption pattern correlated with the principal diffuse interstellar bands, when the mixture was excited by a tungsten lamp. Three of the fluorescence features are noted to correspond to the Red Rectangle emissions at 5740, 5675 and 6382 A, and appear to be correlated with absorption features attributed to C2(-). Results suggest that the observed Red Rectangle emissions originate in the fluorescence phenomena of matrix-isolated species in grain mantles.
