Global properties of the magnetosphere during a substorm growth phase are studied, and results indicate that the magnetosphere often stores energy for a substantial period of time before rapidly releasing the energy at the substorm expansion phase onset. On December 29, 1976 a large injection of energy particles of more than 30 keV was observed by the 1976-059 satellite at 35 deg W longitude, and was associated with the onset of a major substorm. The total energy stored in the magnetotail and the rate of energy dissipation account for all observed geomagnetic activity as well as for all kinetic energy contained in the energetic particle component. The results strongly support the unloading process model, although they are in direct contradiction to the driven substorm model by Akasofu (1980).
