Simultaneous observations of auroral zone electrodynamics were made by the S3-2 and S3-3 satellites to investigate the assumption that the field-aligned current in a flux tube is independent of altitude. Magnetic fields, electric fields, and energetic electrons were measured to provide evidence for parallel electron fields by showing the failure of the magnetic field lines to be equipotentials. It is found that there are times when the field-aligned current per unit of flux in the auroral zone is the same at both satellite altitudes, and there are also times when the field-aligned current per unit of flux is larger at higher altitudes, which requires the flow of current to be perpendicular to the magnetic field. Intense small-scale (less than 1 deg) perpendicular electric fields were usually not observed in the simultaneous low-altitude observations, and in only one of six passes was there a simultaneous observation of a region of intense, small-scale electric field variation at 800 and 1000 km.
