Aspects of the formation and evolution of the Jilin meteorite are discussed. From the condensation and solidification age of the meteorite and its mineral composition, the fractionation-condensation of the solar nebula is examined. Data on the loss of rare gases, the chemical composition of the whole rock, the self-purification of rare-earth elements, and the compositional stability of olivine and orthopyroxene are used to study the thermometamorphic history of the meteorite. The cooling of the parent body is analyzed according to the Ni content and the width of taenite, the retention ages of Ar, fission tracks in the minerals, and the measured Curie temperature. The breakup of the parent body is examined by evidence of crystal breakup, and a two-stage model of the irradiation history of the meteorite is proposed, based on measurements of cosmogenic nuclides. The orbit of the meteor in the solar system and its fall through the atmosphere is discussed.
