Magnetospheric ULF (Ultra-Low Frequency) waves have frequencies in the mHz range, comparable with the drift frequency of high-energy particles, with which they are believed to resonantly interact. A critical parameter in this interaction is the azimuthal mode number of the waves, which determines the resonant condition for drift-resonant acceleration, and also the spatial extent of the waves. In this study we investigate the spatial extent using multi-point measurements in the magnetosphere and on the ground and we compare different measurement techniques for estimating the azimuthal mode number, such as by using azimuthally displaced satellites in the magnetosphere, by using longitudinally aligned magnetometers on the ground and by studying signatures of energetic particle flux modulations. Case studies are presented and compared.
