The keV-plasma experiment on the GEOS-1 and GEOS-2 satellites designed for geostationary orbit is described. The three-dimensional distribution functions of hot electrons and ions in the energy range 0.3-20 keV were determined. Instrumentation and experimental data are discussed in terms of differential flux in the energy-pitch angle space. From this, the distribution function in velocity space can be found by means of a simple transformation. The instrumentation in fact provides three-dimensional distribution functions but the plasma data are usually best organized in pitch angle in those parts of the magnetosphere which the GEOS-spacecraft reaches.
