A field mill utilising the variation of charge density with position over a plane surface is described. A circular insulated plate from which the output is obtained has concentrically above it a rotating grounded semicircular plate and these plates are mounted on one side of a cuboidal box. The theory of operation is given and the results of numerical calculation of the dependence of the mill's sensitivity on its size and shape are presented graphically. The mill is unaffected by self-charge but its sensitivity is lower than that of a comparable end-on mill.
