We consider the various formation/destruction and excitation processes associated to the deuterated hydrogen molecule in photon-dominated regions. The geometry of the cloud is assumed to be plane-parallel with an ultraviolet (UV) field impinging on one side of the cloud. The rotational equilibrium of the HD molecule is then obtained as a function of the visual extinction for various densities and values of the ultraviolet interstellar radiation field (ISRF). Prediction of the submillimeter rotational lines of HD is given.
