In this paper we discuss the role played by collective plasma processes in generating electromagnetic radiation and in accelerating relativistic particles in astrophysical objects such as galactic nuclei, quasars, or pulsars. We give simple, order-of-magnitude relations which enable us to estimate the parameters of the plasma processes under cosmic conditions. We pay special attention to a plasma with an admixture of ultra-relativistic particles and to a fully relativistic plasma.
In the last section we give as an illustration - and without any pretensions to a complete discussion - concrete applications of the relations obtained for the appropriate astrophysical objects.
