The characteristics of the proton flare active regions have been investigated and a method of estimating force-free factor suggested. On assuming that the force-free factor is a constant, the structures of the force-free magnetic fields and the potential energies of the magnetic fields have been calculated for three proton flare active regions. It is shown that before the occurrence of proton flares the force-free factors increase and the potential energies of the magnetic fields decrease. It is possible that the decreased potential energies of the magnetic fields could be the energy sources for constructing the force-free magnetic fields and producing the proton flares.
