In this paper, a few instances of SC type geomagnetic storms are studied to find changes in f0F2 at three longitudinally displaced equatorial stations for different local seasons and commencement times of the storms. It is shown that the progressive phases and magnitude of the changes in f0F2 at a place depend more on the SC time and severity of the storm rather than on the season. f0F2 data of Kodaikanal (I = 3.5°N) are then studied for 59 SC type geomagnetic storms classified into four groups according to times of commencement. SD and Dst variations of f0F2 are computed employing the method earlier used by Kotadia and Ramanathan (1962) for a low latitude station like Ahmedabad (I = 34°N). The SD variation shows values of f0F2 above normal for most of the day until about 2300 hours with a pronounced peak near sunrise. The Dst variation shows increased values of f0F2, the increase being larger on the second 24-hour interval of the storm, and decreased values during the first few hours after the commencement. Variations in the horizontal intensity of the Earth's magnetic field for the same storms as used for f0F2 analysis are also included. The results are then discussed to give a possible explanation.
