The transfer reaction, excited O2 + O(3P) yields O2(X 3 Sigma g -) + O(1S) is considered as a potential source of the auroral green line at 5577 A. The excited molecular state is tentatively identified as the O2(c 1 Sigma u -) state. It is shown that the proposed mechanism can explain the green line emission for an auroral model based on energy transfer from an excited molecular state.
