Effects of auroral electron bombardment on odd nitrogen species in the lower thermosphere are investigated by simulating a sequence of typical auroral substorms and studying the fate of each species for alternating periods of production and decay. Vertical transport of ions is taken into account, and the computations extend to an upper boundary at 700 km. The analysis is based on a time-dependent auroral model that couples the thermal properties of the medium to ionospheric chemistry and transport in a self-consistent formulation. The coupled continuity equations include diffusive transport of the minor constituents NO, N(2D), and N(4S); the odd nitrogen species and 10 ionic species are included in the auroral chemistry, along with the production and loss of N(+), dissociative recombination of N2(+), and the reaction between O2(+) and N2. Results for several cases are presented in the form of isodensity contours plotted as a function of altitude and time.
