Incoherent scatter measurements of the parameters involved in the dynamical processes which couple the protonosphere to the F region are presented for two similar postsunset periods in August 1975. It is shown that the ion velocity and composition data from above and below the critical height have different characteristics. The H(+) and O(+) fluxes follow similar temporal variations at high altitudes where the ion height distributions are governed by diffusion, this behavior being consistent with a simple postsunset contraction of the plasma due to decreasing temperatures. At lower latitudes, where the ion concentrations are influenced by charge exchange reactions, the temporal variations of the H(+) and O(+) fluxes are no longer similar. There is no simple relationship between the F2 region O(+) flux and the total ion transport to or from the protonosphere.
