The location of HF backscatter curtains in the F-region, measured by means of sweep frequency sounders at Nurmijarvi, Finland, and Lindau, FRG, was compared with the location of the plasmapause, determined using whistlers recorded in Northern Finland at an L-value of about 5.6, during the night February 28-March 3, 1977. The backscatter curtains seem to fall into two groups. The first group appears at high L-values outside the plasmapause in the afternoon and moves to lower L-values nearer the plasmapause with increasing local time. The second group lies constantly at lower L-values than the plasmapause.
