High-resolution observations are presented of the infrared point source in M17 SW in the 2-2.5 micron spectral region. Strong B-gamma emission is observed which we show is associated with the infrared source and not with the overlying H II region. If an H II region excited by a zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) star gives rise to the observed B-gamma emission, then the total luminosity of the infrared source exceeds the observed 2-20 micron luminosity by more than a factor of 10. Further observations are necessary to test models of this source.
