The 10 micron properties of planetary nebulae appear to be most closely related to the mean electron density and hence to the evolutionary development of these objects. This conclusion is based on previously reported 10 micron magnitudes and new measurements of the line-to-continuum ratio for the S IV forbidden line. The behavior of the line-to-continuum ratio as a function of electron density can be interpreted as a result of the expansion of the nebulae and the resulting lower grain temperature. This picture is supported by the variation in the color temperature across the 10 micron window as a function of 10 micron excess.
