Possibility of predicting surface wind speed in the north Indian Ocean from in situ observations and surface wind components from satellite scatterometer observations using an approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) has been demonstrated in this work. The approach, unlike other prediction methods, provides explicit analytical forecast equation. Predictions made up to 3 days in advance have been found to be significantly superior to those made by persistence and autoregressive techniques.
