Is the origin of petroleum organic or inorganic? In a discourse to the
Royal Institution on November 11, Sir Robert Robinson argued that both
theories are correct and that petroleum has a duplex origin. He went on
to consider the carbonaceous constituents of certain meteorites and
noted a possible implication relating to the origin of life on Earth.
