Planetary ring systems provide excellent natural laboratories in which to study collective effects in astrophysical discs involving both interparticle and external gravitational forces as well as physical collisions. We review the basic physics underlying the structure of ring systems, their evolution due to viscous transport of angular momentum, gravitational interactions with nearby and embedded satellites, and possible origin. These concepts are illustrated with examples drawn from the ring systems of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
