SN1987A has led us to reconsider the possibility of detection ofgravitational radiation associated with a collapse event ingeneral. So far several experiments have been built to detect theprompt gravitational radiation pulse from the collapse(1)) and fordetection of continuous gravitational radiation from the Crabpulsar.(2)) However, while the importance of gravitational radiation inthe slowing down of a newborn rapidly rotating neutron star was knownfor a long time,(3)) possible detections of these gravitational waves froma source in the Galaxy with present detectors (and from a Virgocluster source with next generation detectors) have been passedunnoticed. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the possible S/Nratio from such a signal in the present and future gravitationalradiation detectors and to encourge observers to operate theirdetectors in this observation mode after a supernova event.
