In this paper we consider plasma modes that can occur in a multicomponent plasma that includes heavy ions, for example helium or oxygen, as well as their effect on ion acceleration. It is found that the addition of heavy ions can excite both a modified lower hybrid wave and ion-ion hybrid modes (Buchsbaum mode) in the presence of an auroral electron beam.
