A sporadic multiple X line reconnection (MXR) process at the dayside magnetopause is proposed as a source of energy to produce ULF hydromagnetic waves in the dayside magnetopause cusp region. In the MXR process, repeated formation and convection of magnetic islands and elongated plasma clouds compress and distort the adjacent closed geomagnetic field lines. The process is shown to lead to the generation of ULF waves which are expected to be approximately linearly polarized.
