Scientific paper
Coronal processes have been usually modelled using approaches that focus on a subset of the necessary physics. Examples are MHD models that do not address energy transport, or particle acceleration models that neglect the global magnetic field and plasma context. The problem is particularly acute when trying to model fragmented energy release. The (good) reason for this is the large differences in spatial and temporal scales that govern macro-dynamics, energy transport and particle acceleration. However, at the present time a new generation of models are being developed that attempt to couple the physics in simple ways. This paper reviews these models, and offers suggestions for future progress.
