Earth Radiation Belts: Solar-Terrestrial Relations

Scientific paper

A high sensitivity "Lyulin" dosimeter was located on board the MIR Space Station and has been in operation since September 1989. After 24 March 1991 two additional stable maxima in flux channels were observed in the south-east part of the South Atlantic anomaly. These two maxima existed for at least several months. In April additional maxima were localized in several geographical coordinate regions. The appearance of these maxima seems to be closely connected with preceding powerful solar flare events and associated geomagnetic disturbances. After the series of solar flare events in June 1991 significant enhancement of this new radiation belt formation was observed.
