The recurring (period = 33 yr) meteor shower in the Leonides is discussed with reference to the history of its observation. Attention is given to Schiaparelli's discovery that the shower actually constitutes the remains of Temple's comet, first recorded in 1866. The orbital path of the meteoroid fragments around the sun is examined, noting perturbations due to Jupiter and Saturn. On 18 Nov. 1999, the earth will intersect the densest region of the shower, and an especially spectacular display is predicted, if the night is clear.
