An explanation is provided for the phenomenon of enduring meteor trains which appear at a height of about 85 km as double lines of light. The peculiar formation almost certainly results from the expanding meteor grain assuming the shape of a hollow cylinder. It is shown that this behavior is to be expected on the basis of recent models of the mechanism of long enduring train luminosity. The considered model takes into account the deposition of Na atoms by an ablating meteoroid in a column some tens of kilometers long, a charge exchange between meteoric metal ions and the sodium particles, and reactions between the metal ions and ozone. Train surface brightness profiles for meteors of 30 and 60 km/sec at various times after train formation are presented in a graph. A central hollow is found to develop only for velocities of more than 50 km/sec.
