An analysis is presented of the dependence of D-st on r sub b exp minus 3 (r sub b is the geocentric distance to the subsolar point of the magnetopause) for the following ranges of the Kp index: not greater than 1(-), not less than 1(0) and not greater than 1(+), not less than 2(-) and not greater than 2(0), not less than 2(+) and not greater than 3(+), and not less than 4(-). This analysis provides evidence for the variability of the surface-current field in the magnetosphere and for magnetospheric ring currents for different levels of magnetic disturbance. The data used are average hourly values of geocentric distances to the boundary of the magnetosphere in the case of multiple passes of the magnetopause by Explorer 12 or direct values for the case of single passes from August to October 1961.
