The effects of an interstellar magnetic field on the gas flow behind a strong shock front are considered. The ambient density and energy of supernova remnants are estimated from the intensity ratio of sulfur lines I(6717)/I(6731). It is found that, on average, the ambient density around galactic supernova remnants is 4 per cu cm. The total energy appears to be the same for all supernova remnants (to within a factor of about 5). A mean value of 4 by 10 to the 51st power erg is found.
