The paper examines methods of detecting narrow spectral lines, hidden by spatially inhomogeneous frequency shifts, in the radiation of distant sources. The fundamental possibility of using the Brown-Twiss (1957) correlational method and the method of optical heterodyning with independent heterodynes is analyzed. The normalized cross correlation function in the plane of two receivers of radiation from a distant source having spatially inhomogeneous spectral broadening is calculated. Estimates are made of the signal/noise ratio for both methods in application to sources - 'laser' regions in a stellar atmosphere - in the presence of strong spatial broadening of the spectrum due to rotation.
