Pioneer 10 results of observations of the magnetic field of Jupiter were presented in the form of two models: a single decentered dipole, and two dipoles of different magnitude and orientation displaced by different amounts from the center of Jupiter. Each of these models is presented as a spherical harmonic expansion about the center of Jupiter, showing that there is considerable agreement among the models. It is then shown that the apparent complexity of the multipole models results from using a coordinate system concentric with Jupiter. An origin of coordinates can be chosen displaced from the planetary center demonstrating that the field more closely approximates a purely dipolar configuration than is apparent from the original centered representation.
