It is shown that it is difficult to determine absolute coordinates for geodetic points and to bridge the continents by the classical geodetic methods. A short description of the satellite-observation instruments convenient for geodetic purposes and a review of special geodetic satellites are followed by an outline of the geodetic satellite methods and the results obtained: Determination of geodetic points; determination of station-to-station directions; the World Geodetic System; and determination of the gravity field of the earth by an analysis of the orbital perturbations. Finally, a summing up of organisation questions is given and new perspectives are shown.
