The development of very wide-field UV cameras to be used as complements to the narrow-field UV and IR telescopes on board Spacelab is discussed. Wide-field UV optical devices employed in short-duration rocket-borne experiments are described; increases in resolution obtained through the use of microchannel image intensifiers are considered. The development of a photon-counting TV system is also mentioned. Applications of the very-wide-field cameras include the survey of UV, IR stars up to the fourteenth magnitude and extended monochromatic emission in the galactic range, as well as the search for extended halos surrounding galaxies and the hypothetical UV background of galaxy clusters.
