Active nuclei in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, as well as in quasistellar objects, are discussed. The emission lines from the Seyfert galaxy, which has a nearly stellar nucleus and a strong emission spectrum with wide lines, are studied to ascertain the physical conditions of the emitting gases. In addition, a synthetic spectrum for quasistellar objects, containing the main features from the red to the Lyman series, is reviewed. Synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons, two mechanisms which may contribute to part of the spectral continuum from active nuclei, are also considered.
