The paper investigates an efficient variational-iterative method for the problem of diffuse reflection by a plane-parallel inhomogeneous atmosphere with isotropic scattering, a problem relevant to radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres. Primary emphasis is on the construction of an accurate source function for the determination of reflected, transmitted and local intensities of radiation for the entire medium. The aims of the paper are to: (1) discuss the nature of errors introduced by use of the variational method alone, (2) to show that an iterative method is successful at filtering the type of errors (with oscillatory properties) introduced by the variational method, and (3) to investigate the choice of trial functions.
