Results obtained from a satellite and ground-based coordinated experiment performed during the intense solar particle events of August 3-11, 1972 are discussed. Effective electron loss rates in the D region ionosphere are derived as a function of altitude, solar zenith angle, and the magnitude of the production rate. Production rate profiles are calculated for the 40-90 km region, along with electron density profiles up to altitudes as low as 50 km. A detailed mapping of the characteristics of the twilight anomaly as a function of altitude is made. For the first time the long-standing twilight anomaly problem is experimentally confirmed, and the dominant role that the solar illumination of minor neutral species such as O, O3, and H2O plays in controling the production and loss of electrons in the D region is substantiated. The twilight results are in agreement with the theoretical postulation that the sunrise/sunset asymmetry results from the interaction of the solar visible and UV radiation with the ozone layers above the earth. Recombination rate coefficients are also determined.
