The paper discusses a shock-wave mechanism for blowing gases off the top of the atmosphere in amounts independent of the molecular weight of the gas. Heavy gases such as Ne, N2, O2, CO2, and CH4 may be blown off the top of the atmosphere by shocks evolving from small piston-like motions of the earth surface caused by earthquakes, volcanic explosions, and meteorite collisions. Some of these gases are ionized as they are blown off through the magnetosphere, and the amount so ionized seems to account for the C, N, and O found in the Van Allen belt.
