An overview of the classification of C stars and the properties of various C star species is given. Results from recent studies on C stars are outlined, including studies of effective temperatures and bolometric corrections, UV opacity, and the detection of faint C stars. In addition, consideration is given to the Galactic distribution of C stars, the ratio of C to M stars, the luminosity of C stars, variability among C stars, and the kinematic properties of C stars.
