The stability of the magnetopause is investigated by analyzing the stability toward a general perturbation of a surface separating two collisionless plasmas moving relative to each other. 'Double adiabatic' equations are used to describe the collisionless solar-wind and magnetospheric plasmas, a general dispersion equation is derived, and the special case of a tangential discontinuity in identical media is examined. Characteristic parameters of the magnetotail region are employed to carry out a detailed numerical analysis of the stability of the boundary between the magnetosphere and the solar wind. The results show that even a boundary which is stable toward a perturbation propagating parallel to the magnetic-field lines at any shear speed will be rendered unstable in some velocity domain by propagation perpendicular to the field lines.
