Karlson's space-charge model (1962, 1963) has been used to calculate a self-consistent picture of the electric field in a moving rarefied plasma located in a nonuniform magnetic field. When Karlson derived the electric-field equation, an error arose because he identified particle density with the density of gyration centers. In the present paper, this error is corrected by employing a microscopic approach to the problem. The accuracy of the correction is verified by comparing the corrected equation with electric-field equations derived in a continuous-medium approximation from the generalized Ohm's law and from the equations of two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics.
