The paper proposes a number of new methods for the determination of total electron content in the ionosphere in the transverse zone. The methods, based on the use of the general form of the equation for describing electromagnetic wave propagation in an anisotropic plasma and on the use of ray tracing, include: (1) the two near-frequencies method, (2) the single frequency method, (3) the two distant-frequencies method, and (4) the three frequencies method (20, 40, and 41 MHz). The reliability of the data for total electron content gradient would be improved by accurate determinations of (1) the correct order of synchronism, and (2) the residual Faraday rotation angle which gives the precise value of Faraday rotation at any point of the record, up to zones in which the quasi-longitudinal approximation is valid.
