The main objectives of the Global Atmospheric Research Programme (GARP) which are to improve our ability to understand, simulate and predict the global circulation of the atmosphere, are described in the light of current knowledge and likely progress in both science and technology during the next decade. Emphasis is given to the most important problems facing GARP both in obtaining an adequate global coverage of observations and in formulating physico-mathematical models to simulate and predict atmospheric behaviour.
