A comparison of field-aligned and ionospheric current distributions on a quiet and on a moderately disturbed day in Alaska reveals that the region I and II field-aligned currents consist of two systems: the part I system in the dayside and the part II system in the nightside. On a very quiet day the part II system is either absent or weak, but on a moderately disturbed day it becomes a dominant feature. It is also shown that both the ionospheric currents and the electric fields on both quiet and disturbed days can be understood in terms of an ionospheric response to changes of the part I and part II systems.
