Some features of the solar activity cycle are discussed from the vantage point of ground-based observations at Mt. Wilson. Solar rotation and large-scale surface velocities are examined in relation to solar activity. It is proposed that torsional oscillations take place at a layer where the differential rotation, i.e. the latitude gradient, does not exist or has a very low amplitude.
